This week’s Economist featured a 14-page special report of mobile telecoms. While almost all the articles related to GIS and spatial thinking, this article relates to me because for the past four months, I’ve been carrying around a Garmin Vista HCx wherever I go. I download the points every two weeks or so and import them into ArcGIS. It’s always exciting to see the tracks and the development of my “spatial diary” (I’m the proud owner of spatialdiary.com).
The data provided by GPSs on cell phones will allow algorithms to determine what information will be displayed on the limited screen of cell phones
There is no reason why simple GIS capabilities cannot be built into the phone (point labeling functions, density maps etc). As cellphones and GPS continue to merge, there will be countless opportunities to process, interpret and display GPS-derived data.
