July 29 & August 12, 2008- Hain’s Point - Washington, D.C.
I’ve been going sailing after work. The boats is located next the USS Sequoia; in the Washington, DC Marina.

August 12 - Red Track
The winds were good until the sun went behind a cloud. Once the cloud passed, the wind picked back up.
Trip Length: 2.62 Miles (2.27 nautical miles)
Maximum Speed: 6.0 mph (1.97 knots)
Moving Time: 1. Hour 17 Minutes
Moving Average: 2.0 mph
July 29 - Blue Track
This was my second time sailing, as you can see from the maneuvers, practice is needed. While the wind was pretty calm, patrolling around was still managable.
A highlight was watching the President’s triumvirate helicopter-cade flying <500 ft directly above, one of the choppers separated from the group and went to the White House.
Trip Length: 3.34 miles (2.90 nautical miles)
Maximum Speed: 12.1 mph (10.5 knots)
Moving Time: 1 hour 9 minutes
Moving Average: 2.9 mph

August 3 – 8, 2008 - San Diego, California
For work, I went to the ESRI conference in San Diego. The weather was nicer than I imagined; along the harbor/near the water the affluence is astonishing. However, it’s equally shocking how quickly the city changes; within a few blocks, it goes from opulence to a post apocalyptic wasteland. Additionally, it was amazing how few cars are on downtown streets, even during rush hour.
Below is a density map of where I travelled. The most recent high-resolution image I could find IKONOS image from 1999, notice that Petco park is being built in the lower-right of the image.

When I initially arrived in San Diego, it would have been very useful to have access to a spatial “wisdom of crowds”. In the near future, other visitors (or locals) could mark sites, neighborhoods, or vistas that they find interesting. These point clouds will then be available through maps on cellular phones.
On the last day of the conference, we took a ferry to Coronado Beach in the afternoon.

On water = 3.1 Miles
On land = 4.2 Miles

These are density maps I created from GPS points. Looking at them makes me not only appreciate my (relatively) short commute and how I only tend to travel only in a small portion of Washington, DC.
Although it took some data manipulation to create this maps, in the future, maps like these will be available with the touch of a button. Unfortunately, my GPS takes a relatively long time to lock in satellites and the batteries are always running out, and I often forget to bring the GPS with me.
